History

The Department of Zoology is one of the three Departments that emerged in 2004 from the erstwhile Department of Biological Sciences, which hitherto was one of the foundation Departments of the University of Ilorin in 1976 in the former Faculty of Science. The Faculty of Science was one of the three faculties at the inception of the University in 1975. The Faculty of Science was later split into Faculties of Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. The Department of Zoology belongs to the former. The First graduates in the Department were produced in 1979 with B.Sc. Honours Degree in Biology. The Department began awarding B.Sc. Honours in Zoology in the year 1980. Postgraduate studies in the Department started in 1977 and the Department awards degrees of M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. Zoology in Fisheries and Hydrobiology, Parasitology, Entomology, Cell Biology and Genetics and Environmental Biology and Ecology. The first postgraduate degree was awarded in 1978.
