Senior Lecturer
Zoology
University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria

Dr Abass Toba Anifowoshe is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Zoology (Cell Biology and Genetics Unit), Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Ilorin. The main focus of his research is to understand how environmental pollutants, including nucleic acid, interact with the biological system. To explore these, he uses a different approach to dissect the associated mechanisms. He is also interested in different omics, including exposomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics. Experimental approaches include genetic, molecular, biochemical, and genotoxic assays, microscopy, and behavioral tests.
The main research areas of interest are: Environmental Toxicology, Molecular Biology, and Genetics.

His academic achievements are outstanding. He recently earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Developmental Biology and Genetics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, where he pioneered research on microplastics in the Cauvery River. For this groundbreaking proposed project, he was awarded the prestigious Full-Time TWAS-DBT Postgraduate Fellowship for five years (2018-2023). His research also secured a GARP travel grant from the Indian Institute of Science and a SETAC Europe 33rd Annual Meeting Student Grant for non-Europeans. He presented his remarkable findings at the SETAC Europe 32nd Annual Meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark, SETAC North America 43rd Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, USA, and SETAC Europe 33rd Annual Meeting in Dublin, Ireland.

Dr. Anifowoshe has made significant contributions to the scientific community, with over 40 publications as a first or co-author in esteemed international journals. His research lab focuses on the interactions between environmental pollutants, including microplastics, and biological systems, particularly nucleic acids.

Beyond the lab, he is passionate about teaching, playing table tennis and badminton, and watching movies or football. He is an active member of SETAC Africa, Genesis, and GTAN. Additionally, he serves as an adjunct lecturer at several universities and works as a research consultant for a few international companies.

His dedication to both academia and extracurricular activities makes him an inspiring figure in the scientific community.
